Captions for Instagram generates captions, hashtags and subtitles for short videos and images that you choose. This policy explains exactly what is collected, who processes it, how long it is kept, and how to delete it.
| Data | Why | When |
|---|---|---|
| Email address | To create and recover an account, and to link purchases to it | Only if you register with an email address or sign in with Google |
| Password | Sign-in | Stored only as a salted scrypt hash. We never store or see your password |
| Videos and images you select | To transcribe speech and analyse the content you asked us to analyse | Only for a file you explicitly pick and submit |
| Generated results | Captions, subtitles and analytics returned to your device | While the job is active |
| Purchase records | To grant credits and subscription entitlements | When you buy through Google Play |
| Activity and error events | To keep the service working and diagnose failures | Ongoing. Recorded against an internal account identifier only, with no captions, transcripts or media content |
| Designs you submit to Discover | To show them in the public Discover gallery | Only if you choose to submit one |
| Data | Retention |
|---|---|
| Uploaded videos and images | Deleted automatically within 24 hours, and immediately after a job finishes |
| Rendered subtitle videos | Deleted automatically after 7 days |
| Job records and generated results | 24 hours |
| Activity and error events | 60 days, then deleted automatically |
| Account, credits and purchase history | Until you delete your account |
Media is not processed only in memory: it is written to private encrypted storage so the job can run, and then deleted on the schedule above. We say so plainly because Play asks specifically whether processing is ephemeral, and for this app it is not.
We use the following processors, and nothing is sold or shared for advertising or profiling:
| Processor | What it receives | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon Web Services (United States) | Uploaded media, transcripts, account and purchase records, email | Hosting, storage, speech and image analysis, sending email |
| Deepgram (United States) | The audio of a video you submit for subtitles | Speech recognition. Every request opts out of Deepgram's model improvement programme, so your audio is not retained to train their models |
| Google Play Billing | Purchase tokens | Verifying purchases and subscriptions |
| Google AdMob | Ad requests, without an advertising identifier | Showing ads on the free tier. Where required, you are asked for consent first through Google's consent form |
| Google Sign-In | Your Google account email and identifier | Only if you choose to sign in with Google |
You can delete your account and all associated data from inside the app at any time, with no waiting period. See Delete your account for the steps and for what happens to Google Play purchase records.
This app is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.
Data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Uploaded media is stored in private storage with no public access. Passwords are stored only as salted scrypt hashes. Access to production data is limited to the operator of this service.
If this policy changes materially, the date at the top changes and the new version is published here before the change takes effect.
